‘Shirley’ Review: Regina King Shines As Political Trailblazer And First Black Female Elected To Congress And To Run For President

A review of Netflix's 'Shirley' in which Regina King plays Shirley Chisholm, the trailblazing politician who was first Black Female in Congress

Writer/Director John Ridley ( 12 Years A Slave) wisely does not try to tell the cradle-to-grave tale of Shirley Chisholm but instead zeroes in on that extraordinary time in this country where a feisty Black woman dared to stand up to her party’s power structure and put herself in the running for President. Into the race came Chisholm, just four years after being elected to Congress, and no doubt she was on a mission which inspired an enthusiastic group around her to support this seemingly Quixotic quest to become the first woman and first Black person ever to attain a major party nomination as President. None were more determined and confident of their place at the table than Chisholm, but it was brutal and we see the back stabbing along the way, the highs and lows, the battle with the very male Congressional Black Caucus as well as conflicts in her own inner circle, and in her personal life as her marriage hits a rocky road.
