Zoe Saldaña Says the Heart of ‘Emilia Pérez’ Is ‘Not Mexico’ After Oscars Win

Zoe Saldaña responded to criticism about the portrayal of Mexico in 'Emilia Pérez' after winning Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

Saldaña added that she is “also always open to sit down with all of my Mexican brothers and sisters and with love and respect, having a great conversation on how Emilia could have been done better.” “I have no problem with that,” she noted. Emilia Pérez won two awards during the Oscars ceremony: Saldaña for Best Supporting Actress and Clément Ducol, Camille, and Jacques Audiard for Best Original Song for “El Mal.” None of the winners mentioned Mexico or trans people in their acceptance speeches. The movie has been hit with controversy in the months since its release by Netflix, including criticism of its portrayal of Mexico, star Selena Gomez’s Mexican accent, and Best Actress nomineeKarla Sofía Gascón ‘s hateful social media posts.
