'The Handmaid's Tale' star Yvonne Strahovski on Serena's wedding, her husband's immediate betrayal, filming the final season, wanting to be likable.
Since that time, they became unlikely off-on allies in a broader fight, and Serena has been forced to scramble after the killing of her powerful husband (Joseph Fiennes). I find it very poignant when characters in TV struggle to see themselves clearly, and there was a pretty perfect example of that when Serena is speaking to the Handmaids at her wedding, reminiscing to them with this quasi-fictional story about how June and she developed a friendship. There were definitely moments where Bruce [Miller, the series creator] and I used to sit down and I’d be like “I don’t know how to justify this.” There was one time we went back and forth for a week, massaging the whole dynamic of Serena’s internal decision-making process.
