YouTube and TikTok star dies after living for 70 years in 7ft iron lung

Paul Alexander, who was left paralysed by polio in 1952 and spent 70 years living in an iron lung, has sadly died after contracting Covid

The illness left him only able to move his head, neck and mouth, and would have killed him at the time if doctors hadn't placed him inside a specially-built iron lung. The machine, which was first used on an eight-year-old girl with polio in the late 1920s, works by artificially pushing air into the lungs, then using mechanical bellows to suck it back out.
