Yankees' Mariano Rivera, Wife Added as Defendants in Sexual Abuse Case

MLB Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, have been named in a sexual abuse cover-up lawsuit affiliated with their church

The lawsuit, filed in January in Westchester County, New York’s Supreme Court, alleges a 12-year-old girl was sexually abused in 2018 at events affiliated with Refuge of Hope, a church founded by the Riveras in 2009, where Clara is a pastor. Months later, the lawsuit alleges the girl was sexually abused by the same older boy during a barbecue at the Riveras’ home. Mariano, who became the first player to ever be unanimously inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, played all 19 seasons of his MLB career with the Yankees before retiring in 2013.
