Will Las Vegas Make or Break the American Film Market?
As the industry looks overseas for talent, financing and more, can America's premiere (and now relocated) indie film market justify its importance?
Case in point: Nick Shumaker, the New York-based head of AC Independent, the sales arm of Anonymous Content, traveled to L.A. to have a bunch of meetings before the start of the AFM and flew back home without circling by Vegas. This year’s Oscar race, for instance, is seeing “Emilia Perez,” Netflix’s musical thriller directed by French helmer Jacques Audiard, and starring Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, as one of the major contenders. A key U.S. player, Sony Pictures Classics, which has always banked on theatrical, has also had a strong year with “Kneecap,” Ireland’s Oscar entry, the British black comedy “Wicked Little Letters” and Nathan Silver’s “Between the Temples.”
