Why Will Smith’s Grammy Awards Appearance Got Mixed Reactions

The Grammy Awards organizers have been criticized for enabling Will Smith to make his awards show return in a tribute to his mentor Quincy Jones.

Smith, 56, made a surprise appearance during the Grammys on Sunday, February 2, as part of the Recording Academy’s tribute to the late music producer Quincy Jones, who died in November 2024. The Grammys’ extended In Memoriam segment also featured Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Janelle Monáe, Lainey Wilson and Stevie Wonder in a musical salute to Jones’ life and legacy. The four-time Grammy Award-winning “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” rapper recently dropped his brand new single “Beautiful Scars” with Big Sean, in addition to confirming he will release his first new studio album in 20 years.
