Why is ‘The Pitt’ being sued by ‘ER’ creator Michael Crichton’s estate? Legal controversy, explained

The HBO medical drama is at the center of an ongoing legal dispute.

Crichton, who is also known for writing the novels that inspired “Jurassic Park” and “The Andromeda Strain,” wrote the original screenplay for “ER” in 1974 and served as an executive producer on the show until his death in 2008. The complaint alleges that Noah Wyle, who also starred as Dr. John Carter in “ER,” plays essentially the same character, this time named Dr. Michael Robinavitch, in "The Pitt." Casey Bloys, the head of HBO’s Max streaming service, also rejected the allegation that “The Pitt” is based on “ER” in comments at a press conference in November, according to Variety.
