Why Did Pundits Underestimate Cillian Murphy?
For much of the 2024 Oscars race, pundits have been skeptical of Cillian Murphy’s chances of taking home Best Actor. Why?
On the eve of the Golden Globe nominations, Kyle Buchanan warned that Murphy “may be held back by sentiment that the real star of Oppenheimer is [Christopher] Nolan.” Strauss informs his underlings to find out where the guy was based, so they’ll know if he was part of “the cult of Oppie in Los Alamos.” The next shot is Oppenheimer driving through the burgeoning town, the perfect teaser for night two! The best explanation I’ve heard is that the directors branch can be snobby about franchise fare, and indeed, the following season saw Avatar: The Way of Water ’s James Cameronand Top Gun: Maverick ’s Joseph Kosinski both left out.
