Why Conan O’Brien—And Every Other Late-Night Host—Will Never Really Retire

With a massively successful podcast and big new travel show, Conan O’Brien is the latest late-night host to buck Johnny Carson’s disappearing act.

O’Brien also has popped up for memorable small roles in movies such as Weird: The Al Yankovic Story(as Andy Warhol), and Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain. And while Letterman’s Montana ranch did come calling for a while after he left The Late Show in 2015, he eventually came back out of retirement to interview celebrities for Netflix in 2018 with My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. And it must be said that this trend doesn’t apply equally across the board, especially when you consider the post-show fates of the women or non-white men who briefly soared into the late-night TV space on broadcast or cable.
