Why Are Frankenstein Movies Suddenly Hot Again in Hollywood?

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Guillermo del Toro are both making films inspired by Frankenstein that will debut within months of each other.

The first, “Frankenstein,” is courtesy of Guillermo del Toro, a master of the macabre whose credits include “The Shape of Water” and “Crimson Peak.” It launches on Netflix in November and stars Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. It was originally slated to debut on September 26, 2025, but the studio pushed it back this week, giving it a little more distance from del Toro’s take. Although the character was a key part of Universal’s monster movies in the 1930s, modern attempts to revive him haven’t shown much of a pulse.
