As hinted at by the title, the new effort is partially a concept album inspired by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s classic 2004 sci-fi romantic drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In the music video for “We Can’t Be Friends” — the Victorious alum’s second single this cycle, following the Billboard Hot 100-topping “Yes, And?” — the singer puts her own spin on the film’s premise, undergoing brain surgery to remove all memories, both good and bad, of her former love. From songs about the end stages of a broken relationship (possibly shedding light on Grande’s Dalton Gomez) to finding new, cosmos-disrupting love in the face of pain ( ahem, Ethan Slater), the undercurrent of Eternal Sunshine is self-love driven by brutal honesty, growth and holding dear one’s own worth.
