What Does the ‘Planet of the Apes’ Franchise Have to Do to Win a VFX Oscar?
Oscars: How 'Dune" Part 2' bested 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'
The excellent work on “ Dune: Part Two ” claimed the VFX Oscar on Sunday, while also leaving a lingering question of why the movies in the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise have also been consistently outstanding but are still overlooked come final voting for the category’s Academy Award. Since Wes Ball’s “ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ” opened last spring, it was widely considered an Oscar frontrunner among VFX practitioners, and its nomination was pretty much viewed as a no brainer. (The category record is held by Dennis Muren who holds eight VFX Oscars for films including “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Jurassic Park.”) Lambert and Nefzer won tonight’s award with first-time nominees Stephen James and Rhys Salcombe.
