Westlife icon was 'worried and scared' after losing everything – with £18 million debt
During Westlife's hiatus from 2012, lead singer Shane Filan went through a turbulent time when his property business collapsed, landing him with a debt of £18 million
In 1998, inspired by the wave of success from boybands like Take That and Boyzone, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Brian McFadden, Nicky Byrne, and Kian Egan shot to fame in Westlife, eventually ranking among the best-selling bands ever. For lead singer Shane Filan, it became a difficult time during his break from the band and he was dealt with a £18 million debt before tragically losing his beloved mum. Shane's mum, Mae passed away the previous December, causing a wave of grief in the entertainment industry, particularly because she had been instrumental in convincing Westlife creator Louis Walsh to take a chance on her son.
