Welcome to the snub club! As the 96th annual Academy Award nominations are announced - a look back at the storied ceremony's biggest oversights

While the few have been rewarded for their talents, many are those whose efforts fell tantalizingly short of winning the covered statuette.

Designed by American sculptor George Stanley, the now iconic statuette depicts an Art Deco themed knight, standing on a roll of film with five spokes, each representing the Academy's individual branches - Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians. Indeed, the newly released nominations for the 94th annual Academy Awards tell their own story, with Margot Robbie notably absent from the Best Actress category, despite Barbie - in which she plays the iconic Mattel doll - breaking box office records with takings climbing well above $1billion. The board instead chose to name Kevin Costner's Dances With Wolves as Best Film in a category that also included Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather: Part III, Jerry Zucker's iconic Ghost and Penny Marshall's Awakenings.
