Weather maps show that bands of volcanic sulphur dioxide are heading their way towards the UK from Iceland and can cause a deterioration in air quality
Sulphur dioxide, known for triggering respiratory issues such as bronchitis and irritating the mouth, throat and lungs, can lead to coughing, wheezing, mucus production and asthma attacks, especially during physical activity. Prof Simon Carn from Michigan Technological University tweeted: "Another batch of #volcanic SO2 en route to the #UK / #Ireland, courtesy of the latest #eruption on #Iceland 's #Reykjanes peninsula. The Foreign Office is cautioning British travellers about venturing to Iceland due to volcanic activity (Image: No credit)"These have affected the town of Grindavik and the area to the north of it.
