Us Weekly Revisits the Classic ‘Pine Barrens’ Episode of ‘The Sopranos’

‘The Soprano’ season 3 episode ‘Pine Barrens’ is one of the most classic hours of television to this day

As explored in HBO’s new documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos the series’ season 3 episode, “Pine Barrens” is widely considered one of the greatest hours of TV of all time. The HBO crime drama began in January 1999 with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) reluctantly walking into the office of his new psychiatrist, Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), after having a panic attack. “One of the aspects of the episode is when you first see Paulie, he’s perfectly coiffed and he’s getting a manicure,” writer Terence Winter says in the Wise Guy documentary, which premiered on HBO on Saturday, September 7.
