Universal Studio Group ‘Massively Invested’ in Europe’s ‘Unbelievably Competitive’ Unscripted Market: ‘Everyone Is Looking for the Next Big Thing’

Two top Universal execs said the company's all-in on finding Europe's next breakout format, following hits like 'The Traitors' and 'Destination X.'

Making a pitch to a roomful of European producers in Rome, Rodman highlighted Universal’s first-look deal with “Depp v. Heard” director Emma Cooper, who launched Empress Films in 2020, as an example of the win-win scenario for both the studio and creators. The longtime unscripted producer and Universal Television exec, who was promoted to executive vice president of the studio’s alternative division in 2021, acknowledged that there’s still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the industry amid the disruptions of recent years. While formats “will always be the core of our business,” she continued, Universal is increasingly diversifying its offerings and “trying to double-down in true crime and premium documentaries,” two genres that she said are “very active” in the current marketplace.
