Universal Music Accuses Rival of Rampant Piracy Via Knockoff Tracks by ‘Kendrik Laamar’ and ‘Llady Gaga’

Universal Music Group accused rival distributor Believe of engaging in massive piracy, distributing sped up versions of songs under fake names.

Universal Music Group sued the start-up distributor Believe for $500 million on Monday, alleging the rival firm has engaged in “rampant piracy” of its most famous artists. UMG alleges that Believe’s business model is predicated on pirating copyrighted works, including songs by Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Elton John, the Rolling Stones and many others. Because such reforms would undermine and expose their system of building scale and market presence by distributing music for which they have no rights and illegally collecting royalties to enrich themselves and their coconspirators.”
