One man, named Cyrus the Great, was a ruler of one of these tribes and began defeating neighboring kingdoms including, Babylon, Lydia, and Media. Starting out small, it didn't take long for the empire to expand outwards to places such as Central Asia, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and some European territories. Reorganized and rebuilt under Darius I, the Royal Road was a highway of sorts that was built to enable quick communication throughout the empire from Susa to Sardis.
