CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Inside No. 9, by the demonically inventive Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, is ending after a ten-year run.

Shearsmith and Pemberton, who honed their craft in the sketch show about a forgotten English village, The League Of Gentlemen, relish stereotypes, the more twisted the better. Finneran was a buttoned-up, hopelessly sad housewife, the sort Victoria Wood did so ruthlessly well, stuck with the world's most boring husband (Shearsmith). Sadistic teacher Bonnar was understated, compared to Pemberton's turn as an acid-tongued drag queen parading under the stage name of Wilma Dixshow
