Top-flight footballer dead aged 27 after collapsing on the pitch - as Manchester United star leads tributes


Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo has tragically died at the age of 27 after collapsing on the pitch - with former Manchester United star Diego Forlan leading the tributes for him.

The defender was playing for his team, Club Nacional, during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo last Thursday (22 August) when he went into cardiac arrest, collapsing in the 84th minute of the game. Juan collapsed on the pitch and left the stadium in an ambulance, before being cared for in hospital for a number of days and sadly passing away (Image: Photo by Nelson ALMEIDA / AFP)They continued: "We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. The footballer was thought to be a dad to a two-year-old daughter and a newborn, with his wife giving birth to the couple's second child ten days ago, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.
