Tony Awards 2025 Preview: Broadway’s Back on Top — and Breaking All the Rules — With ‘Oh, Mary!,’ ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ and More
In a banner year at the box office, buzzy shows like "Oh, Mary!" and "Maybe Happy Ending" look nothing like the traditional idea of a typical hit.
Among the three titles to notch 10 noms, one — “ Maybe Happy Ending ” — is a quirky near-future romance about robots, originally written in Korean and a favorite in Seoul before it opened on Broadway, in English, in the fall. Among the top awards candidates for plays, frontrunner “Oh, Mary!” (five noms) is a gleefully camp and knowingly ramshackle comedy that most observers would have argued has no place on Broadway — until the show moved to midtown last summer and became one of the season’s hottest tickets. The wild comedy centers on an absurdist imagining of Mary Todd Lincoln as a hard-drinking aspiring cabaret singer desperate to break free of her suffocating marriage.
