Tom Burke on Starring in ‘The Seagull’ and ‘Black Bag’ Alongside Cate Blanchett, and Upcoming ‘Blade Runner 2099’ Series: ‘There Was a Moment of Just Letting Go’
Tom Burke dives into how characters navigate vulnerability and strength in his trio of projects from Chekhov's classic to sci-fi's dystopian future.
Burke (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”) is currently starring alongside the Oscar winner in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic “ The Seagull ” at London’s Barbican, and the two also worked together on Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming espionage thriller “ Black Bag.” Her playwright son, Konstantin (Kodi Smit-McPhee), struggles to step out of her shadow as he pursues his own artistic ambitions and her lover Trigorin (Burke) becomes the object of affection for the aspiring young actress Nina (Emma Corrin). The adaptation, which brings a contemporary edge to Chekhov’s classic, has been what Burke calls “a very holistic process.” Even during technical rehearsals, he notes they found it “very hard to tweak any of the choices without sort of talking about the acting to some degree, which is usually not what happens in the tech.”
