Later taking his talents to Nashville, Keith signed his first record deal and released his debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” and his self-titled album in 1993. In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Keith released the patriotic track “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).” The song sparked tension with The Chicks singer Natalie Maines, who slammed its “ignorant” message in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
