Tim Heidecker Is Not Trying to Make You Laugh With Folk Album ‘Slipping Away’: ‘My Artistic Life Has Been About Obscuring Identity and Irony’

Tim Heidecker discusses his new album 'Slipping Away,' why he doesn’t use a stage name and why some of his characters are reminiscent of JD Vance.

The prolific funnyman, actor, producer and singer-songwriter sat down with Variety to discuss songwriting, why he doesn’t use a stage name and why some of his characters are reminiscent of JD Vance. Recently, I posted this interview I did and someone commented, “Man, all we want to hear you talk about is ‘On Cinema.’” I love “On Cinema,” but if I felt beholden to the audience to only do one thing, I would go nuts. The singular identity is interesting on Spotify, for example, because you have “Slipping Away,” a collection of serious folk songs, next to “An Evening With Tim Heidecker,” which is an intentionally bad hour of stand-up comedy.
