The Repair Shop's Richard Talman on fearing career was over and almost turning down BBC series

But fast-forward 16 years and Richard’s own business is flourishing and he’s become a regular favourite on the hit BBC One show The Repair Shop, which airs tonight (Wednesday, 3 April) and is presented by Jay Blades. On leaving school, Richard - who lives in Sussex with his wife Jenny, a former social worker, and their daughters Emily, six, and Alice, four - was encouraged by a family friend to pursue a career in what he loved and enrolled at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Arts in Whitechapel, East London, before being taken on as an apprentice by renowned jeweller David Lawes in Hatton Garden. She explained, and Hugo is very open about this, that her son was struggling at school as he had dyslexia, and he couldn’t find anyone to take him for work experience because he wasn’t very academic.”
