The Madame Blanc Mysteries review: Baldrick's latest cunning plan? A sun-drenched crime show cameo, writes CHRISTOPHER STEVENS
CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Just for an idle moment, imagine you're a thespian treasure, a much-loved luvvie courted by long-running cosy crime serials offering you a cameo in the sun.
And Sir Tony Robinson, unforgettable as Baldrick in Blackadder, has upgraded his bit part in The Madame Blanc Mysteries (Ch5), filmed on the Maltese island of Gozo, by wangling a place on the regular cast. Returning to the show, playing the jailbird uncle of amiable taxi driver Dom (Steve Edge), he nipped into the kitchen of the local winebar, and by the end of the episode he was running the place — a permanent fixture. Ageing cheeky chappie and star of the Confessions movies Robin Askwith hams up a lovely double act with Sue Holderness, alias Boycie’s wife Marlene from Only Fools.
