The Frogs review: This well-meaning but directionless play suffers from too much monkey business, writes PAIGE BRUTON
PAIGE BRUTON: Comedy fans will surely be relieved the gang are up to their old shenanigans, but anyone hoping to see a contemporary version of Aristophanes' classic may feel a tad aggrieved.
Not least because, after a pandemic, a bereavement and one member's flit to Las Vegas, the four-man troupe has dwindled to just Toby Park and Aitor Basauri, who must now reinvent themselves as a double act. The resulting ultra-meta adaptation, offering insight into the trials and tribulations of a small theatre company working in an industry in crisis, seems tailor made for fans of homespun community drama. There are slapstick gags galore: a contract that drops down from the sky on a string, umpteen donkey jokes and, inevitably, a giant man-eating frog.
