The Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse One Year Later - A Wake-Up Call

Nearly a year after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a new federal report warns that dozens of bridges across the country could be at similar risk.

The report, released by the National Transportation Safety Board, urges federal agencies and bridge owners to conduct vulnerability assessments to determine the risk of collapse from vessel collisions. "Pre-construction activities are already underway, with teams conducting land and underwater surveys, soil sampling, and gathering data to inform the bridge design.Harkness also noted that while the preliminary design has been unveiled, the process is ongoing. "We've gone from 0% essentially, when we've had this happen a year ago, to now, we're beyond 15% and working steadily towards 50% design," Harkness said, adding that construction could begin by the end of the year.Residents and business owners remain hopeful that the new bridge will not only restore lost connections but also drive economic recovery.
