'The Substance' Coralie Fargeat on making her gory sendup of Hollywood sexism and finding a new partner in Mubi, after Universal's exit.
On the day the Oscar nominations were announced, Coralie Fargeat, the director of “ The Substance,” satwith her laptop in her tiny one-bedroom flat in Paris’ bohemian 20th arrondissement, watching as this year’s contenders were revealed. Insiders say Universal respected Fargeat’s vision, as evidenced by its significant financial support of “The Substance.” The studio even turned over the marketing materials it had created for the film to its eventual new owner, Mubi. Fargeat had been fantasizing about presenting her film in com- petition at Cannes since attending the festival’s 2001 premiere of David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive,” whose DVD cover sits right next to her on a shelf in her living room alongside John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”
