The gloomy clouds over the long-term business potential of TV began to gather before the pandemic, but the COVID-19 disruption coupled with the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year forced the industry to confront difficult issues that are no longer far down the road. The money in cable is now going into linear sports, which is not the kind of TV program that can be sold in markets around the world for a high price, the way “ER,” “Seinfeld,” “Law & Order,” “CSI,” and “Grey’s Anatomy” and their ilk have been for decades. Others may have to settle for what Malone called “the arms merchant” role of producing shows for a handful of top global buyers — most of them backed by giant tech firms a la Amazon and Apple.
