The beloved ‘Wok With Yan’ star is back after three decades. What’s he been doing away from the spotlight?


Chef Stephen Yan taught an entire generation about Cantonese cooking with his signature dad humour and aprons adorned with wok-related puns.

Over 15 years and more than 500 episodes of his show “Wok With Yan,” the Hong-Kong-born chef taught thousands of households how to make classic Cantonese dishes like beef and broccoli, while delighting them with hundreds of wok-related puns. Now, after nearly 30 years since he was last in front of a camera, the 85-year-old Vancouver resident is back in the spotlight with a merch collaboration with the Toronto-based, millennial-nostalgia-fueled clothing brand Retrokid as well as a live talk at The Royal theatre on Aug. 10. I was poor and went to people’s stores where they would give me leftover food...I was spending my time on the streets next to a theatre that was starring a Chinese actor, who was Bruce Lee’s father.
