The 30 Best Bob Marley Songs Not on ‘Legend’
The 30 best Bob Marley songs not on the ‘Legend’ compilation.
A bitter track about oppression and exploitation wrapped up in a ‘70s wah-guitar rhythm, “Want More” is a classic showcase of how Marley was always able to deliver occasionally devastatingly damning indictments of modern society in ways that snuck by those who weren’t listening carefully. “One Drop” is a late-career classic in this regard, with just about everything a true fan would come to love about the Marley canon: an earnest vocal, earworm melodies, lyrics that burrow deep in the psyche before revealing their righteous indignation on behalf of the common man, double (and even triple) entendre with a social, religious and militant edge, and a truly great musical performance from the band and backup singers. Probably Marley’s most famous song not the be included on the Legend album, and I’m not sure why it wasn’t — maybe the references to Jesus Christ and Marcus Garvey were too much amid the love and light of the rest of the track list.
