The Cube director adapts a short story by Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill, about a pair of siblings (Laysla De Oliveira and Avery Whitted) who hear a boy crying out for help in a field of tall grass by the side of a relatively deserted road. When economic conditions force Bud back into the vampire-hunting union, he ends up supervised by a pencil pusher played by Dave Franco, who provides some nice comic relief, but it’s the action scenes that really elevate this wonderfully goofy horror-comedy, including an appearance by genre legend Scott Adkins. The timing for this release couldn’t have been better as people fought over supplies at the Piggly Wiggly and questioned how sane we would stay during lockdown.It’s a horror film that gets by on its excellent setup: a vision of a vertical prison system wherein a platform descends from top to bottom, offering temptation for those in the upper levels and torture for those below.
