It’s hard to think of another actor who might have sold the utter disconnection from self that led Peggy to, for instance, ignore the fact of her pregnancy and brusquely move on after birth; this character’s journey, as brought to vibrant life by a signature star of this era of television, was at once the story of a generation of women in the workplace and fundamentally, weirdly individual.
