Thailand’s First International Oscar Shortlist Feature ’How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’ Mines Comedy From Family Clashes
For Thailand’s Oscar hopeful ‘How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’ director Pat Boonnitipat spent months living with his elderly relative.
Boonnitipat, a TV director who makes his feature debut with the film, says that close analysis of his own family dynamics and an obsessive attention to character development were keys to the movie’s box office success and its ability to connect across borders. The film follows M, a young adult man with modest career prospects (portrayed by pop star-turned actor Putthipong Assaratanakul, aka Billkin) decides to move in with his grandmother (played by first time-actor Usha Seamkhum) after she is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The film’s early achievements in Asia were driven by several factors including tear-jerk comparison videos on TikTok, Billkin’s celebrity and appreciation for the Thai-Chinese and Teochew references that underpin the “Grandma” story.
