Terry Gilliam Is Prepping Another Movie, and He Came to Annecy to Find Animators to Inspire Him
Terry Gilliam, the brain behind Monty Python’s cut-out cartoons, recapped his origins and revealed where he found the foot of God.
An absurdist gem about homo sapiens’ disastrous desire to take to the skies — using the same cut-out technique made famous by the irreverent interstitials and opening credits Gilliam designed for the British sketch comedy series “ Monty Python ’s Flying Circus” — the film screened, but won no prizes. As Gilliam spoke, a room filled with hundreds of young animation professionals and students suddenly leaned forward in their chairs, as if they were about to be told he’d stashed a golden ticket beneath one of their seats. Kurtzman had introduced Italian-style “fumetti” to America (comic strips made of still photos, with talk bubbles superimposed in each frame), which struck Gilliam as good practice for an aspiring film director.
