Taylor Swift’s ‘Starlight’ Is About Robert F. Kennedy and Wife Ethel Kennedy: Lyrics, Meaning
Taylor Swift was inspired by Robert F. Kennedy and wife Ethel's love story when she wrote the song Starlight. Inside the lyrics and meaning amid Ethel's death.
Ethel met Robert, who was nicknamed “Bobby,” because he was the brother of her roommate at Manhattanville College, Jean Kennedy, in 1945. “She was a devout Catholic and a daily communicant, and we are comforted in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie,” Kerry’s statement continued. The song is written from Ethel’s perspective and references Robert in the line, “I met Bobby on the boardwalk summer of ’45.”
