Tattoo rule at the Paralympics that could have seen athletes banned from the Paris Games


Over the years many Olympic and Paralympic athletes have taken on the tradition of inking their bodies with the iconic five rings, but it could have seen them banned from the Games

Continuing our summer of sport, the 2024 Paralympics have officially begun with the opening ceremony on Wednesday, 28 August, marking the start of the Games. Josef, who has the Olympic symbol tattooed on his chest, won his heat during the 100m freestyle at the 2016 IPC European Championships but was disqualified for having his ink on show at the Madeira event. There was no exact explanation but Craig Spence, the chief brand and communications officer for the IPC simply said: "Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up."
