Steve Wright's life away from Radio 2 – humble beginnings to broadcasting legend

As the world mourns the loss of radio legend Steve Wright following his death at 69, we take a closer look at his life over the years from humble beginnings to New Years Honours

Initially quiet and unacademic in his youth, Steve actually started his working life in shipping management, but always dreamed of stardom and pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. When previously quizzed about whether he was looking for love again, Steve famously told the Daily Mirror that he “doesn't have time to look for a new partner” due to working so much on his radio programmes. Away from his romantic life, Steve was dedicated to music and was even appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List, for his services to radio.
