Stephen King and Maurice Sendak To Reimagine 'Hansel and Gretel' In New Book
Stephen King and Maurice Sendak — celebrated horror writer and the late children's book author-illustrator, respectively — have collaborated to create a new version of Hansel and Gretel, available Sept. 2, 2025.
Sendak, who died in 2012, is the celebrated author and illustrator behind beloved children's books Where the Wild Things Are and Chicken Soup with Rice, the latter of which earned him the Caldecott Medal. King, 77, is widely renowned as a master of the horror genre, with a number of hit novels, including The Shining, It and Pet Sematary, becoming beloved movies. "Two of his pictures in particular spoke to me: One was of the wicked witch on her broom with a bag of kidnapped children riding behind her; the other was of the infamous candy house becoming a terrible face," he said.
