During a recent First Take episode on ESPN, Smith said something immediately setting social media on fire: “When you got somebody with that kind of potential and they’re white and you are in America, you keep that dude.” He was referring to Flagg, one of those once-in-a-generation high school prospects. Carolina Connect agreed there was an expression of truth in what Smith was trying to say but questioned how he went about it: “Lmao although he’s right he didn’t have to bring up the fact that bruh is white lol.” Interjections of humor, like WizardHandicaps joking about the Mavericks PR team discovering Flagg’s race, only made the whole thing seem increasingly ridiculous for some. Back to basketball, other users were trying to keep the thread going in agreeable territory and tried to clarify a few points: Referring to white stars of the past like Kevin Love and John Stockton, Christos Lavelle said that it’s talent that should be used for discussion instead of skin color.
