Years later, after completing a 3,000-mile cycling challenge from Europe to South America for charity, ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games, Charlie became critically ill with malaria and was put on life support. While in a coma, Charlie suffered flashbacks of traumatic eventsAlthough I was doing all these incredible things and had a successful career, on the inside I was in the same place I was as a child, hiding, scared. The doctor said that I had a very strong heart and that I fought so much, which messes with your head because you think, “Well, is it because of everything I’ve been through that I was able to withstand that?” But I’m not a big fan of polishing adversity, and this idea of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” – it’s toxic.
