In this wide-ranging discussion, we talk to Weaver about the past and present of the Alien franchise (and what the future may hold for Ellen Ripley), her experiences in high-profile hits and misses, and what’s to come, including a first West End theater gig and her first role in a Star Wars movie. I was reading about how you were supposed to have a much bigger role in Annie Hall but couldn’t due to theater commitments and also how Veronica Cartwright had thought she was going to be playing Ripley in Alien up until late in the day… What can you tell me about those circumstances? It has been well-documented that the production faced a number of challenges, from the script taking years and many revisions, to the ill health of DoP Jordan Cronenweth, and Fincher clashing with Fox.
