Show & Tell review: Farce that proves Ayckbourn's still pin-sharp at 85, writes PATRICK MARIMON

Sir Alan Ayckbourn is surely the Sir Geoffrey Boycott of British Theatre.

Dwan — revered as a Samuel Becket ace — is a powerhouse actor, bringing poise, style and ferocity to a sketchy role in which she also deals (badly) with fallout from her pot-smoking teenage son, who is going off the rails. Sturzaker's self-pitying Tom has almost nothing to work with, and his character's creepy solution to the marital rift caused by his conviction for sex crimes (let's not forget) is to run Leigh a hot bath and cook her a romantic dinner. But, like Crim, Katharine Farmer's production drifts through a generic wood and concrete open plan kitchen, dialling down the conflict and adding emotional grey areas to a misconceived plot.
