Shogun's best moments - the gory, tense and moving scenes which made Disney+ drama the new Game Of Thrones

Disney+ have smashed ratings with their new Japanese period drama Shogun drawing comparisons to Game Of Thrones from critics. Here are some of the scenes which made it such a hit.

Based on James Clavell's 1975 novel fictionalising 17th century feudalist Japan, Shogun features brutal beheadings, people being blown to smithereens and execution by boiling alive. In another example of a rapid change from peace to violence, a seemingly humourous anecdote by Saeki developed into him announcing that he had done a deal with Lord Ishido to replace his brother, as his troops surrounded their base. The exchange drew comparisons with Game Of Thrones' 'Red Wedding' for its bloody family dispute, though co-creator Justin Marks told Decider that they were actually thinking of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and the sense of dread felt by the rebel alliance when Han Solo is revealed in carbonite.
