Sex and surrealism: Simone Rocha shines in guest spot for Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris
In a show with a rich seam of subversion, the Irish designer offered her take on Gaultier’s conical bra and Breton top
Photograph: WWD/Getty ImagesIn the grand double-height central hall of Gaultier’s Paris headquarters, with Kylie Jenner and Baz Luhrmann in the front row, these two aesthetics came together in provocation, sex, humour and surrealism. Rocha said backstage after the show that she found common ground with Gaultier in “a love of the breast and the hip and the female form”, adding that the project “felt like we were having a really natural conversation”. Meanwhile, Gaultier’s signature Breton top took on Rocha’s characteristic balletic vibe, as a sheer mesh T-shirt horizontally striped with narrow navy silk ribbons tied into loose bows.
