The first single I bought with my own money at our local Asda — it was a Carrefour then — was Paul Young’s Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home). It’s mad, but I can still remember the pop facts I learned in Smash Hits.I was also mildly obsessed with Five Star, specifically their matching sequinned jumpsuits. Aged nine or ten, I often spent Saturday nights with my grandparents at the British Aerospace Social Club, where my nan taught me how to foxtrot and waltz — skills that came in handy on Strictly[in 2014].
