For her work championing survivors of domestic violence, the actor will receive the inaugural Variety Courage Award

“The first thing that [abusers] do is isolate you so that you don’t have that community,” Hyland continues, underlining just how crucial a survivor’s bond with their pets can be, especially during their darkest days. The organizations work together to provide resources and support to help domestic violence shelters become pet friendly so survivors and their animals can escape and begin their healing journey together. Actor Julie Bowen, who served as a source of support for Hyland during an abusive relationship, praises her former co-star for her resilience and openness in speaking up to advocate for fellow survivors.
